Agave Parryi Truncata

Beautiful & Cold Hardy down to 15°
About:

Botanical Name: Agave parryi truncata

Common Names: Artichoke Agave, Agave truncata

Agave parryi var. truncata – Another personal favorite of mine! This compact rosette-forming succulent features broad, short, squared-off blue-gray leaves with prominent reddish-brown teeth and terminal spines, reminiscent of a beautifully colored blue rose.

Individual plants typically reach heights of 2 to 3 feet tall and widths of 3 to 4 feet. Commonly known as the artichoke agave, its appearance resembles that of an artichoke. Mature plants produce flower spikes that rise 10 to 20 feet, bearing orange buds that open into yellow flowers, usually during summer.

Plant in full morning and early afternoon sun or provide dappled sun throughout the day. I’ve found that this species thrives best with late afternoon shade during the hottest summer months.

It requires minimal irrigation, though it appreciates a periodic drink every few weeks during peak summer heat. Hardy to around 15°F, but it’s worth noting that while it can survive temperatures in the teens, leaf damage may occur. I recommend covering it when temperatures drop below 25°F.

Appearance: Agave parryi truncata is a succulent characterized by rosettes of thick, grayish-blue leaves adorned with prominent red-brown teeth along the margins. These rigid, fleshy leaves culminate in a sharp terminal spine, giving the plant a distinctive and compact appearance often compared to an artichoke.

Native from Durango to Zacatecas, Mexico, this agave adds charm to succulent gardens as a large specimen or in large pots.

Care:

Cold Tolerance:
This succulent is cold-hardy, enduring temperatures ranging from 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 to -9 degrees Celsius).

Sun Requirements:
Prefers full sun to partial shade, thriving in well-lit, sunny locations.

Watering Needs:
Requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Once established, it becomes drought-tolerant.

Common Problems and Remedies:
– Overwatering: Can lead to root rot. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings and ensure proper drainage.
– Pests: Watch for aphids, mealybugs, or scale insects. Control infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
– Sunburn: Protect from intense, prolonged sunlight, particularly in hot climates. Provide afternoon shade if necessary.
– Frost Damage: In colder climates, cover the plant or bring it indoors during frost or extreme cold.

Best Care Instructions:
– Plant in well-draining soil.
– Water sparingly, especially during cooler months.
– Provide full sun to partial shade.
– Protect from frost in colder climates.
– Fertilize sparingly, as agaves are not heavy feeders.
