Common Names: Giant Agave, Pulque Agave
Botanical Name: Agave salmiana
Agave salmiana ‘Green Giant’ (Giant Agave) – This architectural succulent perfectly suits Central Texas, boasting ample size, beauty, sun-loving traits, and exceptional freeze tolerance. Ensure ample space for its growth; after all, it’s aptly named the Green Giant!
Recognizable by its thick, graceful, dark gray-green leaves with projecting spines and imposing stature, reaching heights of 5-6 feet tall and twice as wide. As it matures and blooms, a tall inflorescence emerges, towering over 20 feet and adorned with yellow flowers that attract birds and bees. This agave falls into what I term the “pup” category, producing abundant suckers or babies that can lead to a large colony if left unchecked. For optimal performance, plant it in full sun with well-draining soil.
This is a pupping agave. If you plant one and in time will get multiple.Â
